Jews, remembering the passage through the Red Sea, solemnly celebrate the seventh day of Passover, Christians - the fourth day of the Easter Octave. For Poles, this is the second day of a three-day national mourning for the victims of the fire in Kamen-Pomerania. In the world of big football, the Chelsea and Manchester United teams go to the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League, in the world of Polish football, the court makes several fans of the LKS club LKS an accusation of inciting ethnic hatred for wearing T-shirts with the inscription Death to Vidzev - Jewish Kurve. ” The Main Directorate of Police publishes a March report on the crime rate: compared with March 2008, it grew by 11 percent. The police commented: "The crisis is pushing people into a crime." In Sandomierz, he had already pushed a saleswoman from the meat department, and she had pushed cigarettes without excise from the counter, the woman was detained. In the city, as in all of Poland, it is cold, the temperature is not higher than 14 degrees, but this is the first sunny day after cold Easter.

No, spirits do not come at midnight. Films are still shown on television at midnight, teenagers dream out of their teachers, lovers gather strength for the next time, old spouses are worried about where the money goes, exemplary wives are pulling cakes out of the oven, and reprehensible husbands keep children awake, trying booze open the door of the apartment. At midnight, life is still seething, and it is not easy for the spirits of the dead to produce the proper effect. Another thing is before dawn, when even a gas station attendant takes a nap, and a muddy dawn will little by little take out creatures and objects from the twilight that we did not suspect existed.

The time was nearing four, the sun would rise in an hour, and in the reading room of the State Archive in Sandomierz, Roman Myshinsky, surrounded by those who had died in a Bose, struggled with an overcoming dream. Mountains of parish books of the 19th century exuded a suffocating smell of death, although records predominant in them were related to rather joyful events - christening and weddings. It was simply difficult to get rid of the idea that all these newborns and newlyweds have been rotting in the grave for more than a dozen years, and all these rarely opened books, according to which, God forbid, a vacuum cleaner walked once a year, are the only evidence of their existence. This was already lucky, if we take into account how the war was dealt with the Polish archives.

The room was cold, coffee in a thermos was over, and only curses were born in Myshinsky’s head: what the hell was he looking for genealogical trees for, and he even opened a company instead of taking an assistant position. In universities, incomes are small, but stable, and they pay for insurance there - some advantages. Especially in comparison with the school where his classmates found themselves: with an equally low salary, they managed to taste a sense of hopelessness and suffer from the threats of students, which completely fall under the articles of the criminal code.

He glanced at the open page, where in April 1834 the priests from the parish in Dvikozi deduced calligraphically: "Appearing and their witnesses are illiterate." That, in fact, is all that is known regarding the noble origin of Vlodimierz Nevolin. However, if someone remains in doubt, they say, from the parent, great-great-grandfather Nevolin, who brought the child to be baptized, after umbilical cordmost likely, it was a difficult day, they would have immediately fallen away due to his belonging to the peasant class. Myshinsky was convinced: if you get to the bottom of the marriage certificate, it will turn out that the Marianna Nevolina mentioned in the metric, who is fifteen years younger than her husband, is nothing more than a servant. And at that time, true, she lived with her parents.

He stood up, stretched sharply, touching the pre-war picture of Sandomierz Market Square hanging on the wall with his hand. Corrected it and thought: but now the area looks a bit different. More modest or something. He looked out the window, the area covered with fog. What nonsense, why on earth should the old medieval square look different, and why does he even think about it? Better take on the job if you want to restore Nevolin's past and catch up to Warsaw by one in the afternoon.

What surprises can expect him? With the marriage certificate, no troubles were foreseen, as well as with the metrics of Jakub and Marianna, they could be found somewhere - for the archival researchers, the Kingdom of Poland was, thank God, quite favorable. Thanks to the Napoleonic constitution, starting from the 19th century, in the Duchy of Warsaw, the registration of acts in the parishes was carried out in two copies, one of which was transferred to the central archive. Later, the rules changed, but it was still not so bad. But in Galicia, things were worse, and East Kresy - that’s where the real genealogical black hole is! For example, in the Zabuzhansky Archive in Warsaw, acts took place once or twice. That is, with Maryanna, who was born in the year 1814, no problems were foreseen. With Yakub - the end of the XVIII century - the same thing, priests educated people, and metric books were complete, except perhaps the most lazy parishes. And in Sandomierz, a historical fact came to the rescue: during the war, neither the Nazis nor the Soviets turned the city to ashes. The oldest books belonged to the XVI century - because only then, at the Council of Trent, did the Church come up with the idea of rewriting its lambs.

He rubbed his eyes and leaned over the open book. It turns out that you need to look at the records of weddings in Dvikoz over the past two years, and at the same time immediately look for the mother. Maiden name Kvetnevskaya. Hm. A bell rang in my head.

Two years have passed since Myshinsky, without heeding anyone's advice, opened the Golden Root company. This idea got into his head when he, collecting materials for the candidate in the Main Archive of Metric Books, saw people with a crazy gleam in his eyes, helplessly looking for any information about their ancestors in order to recreate his family tree. He helped one boy out of pity, the girl - because of the bust that had to him, and finally - Magda, because she was charming with her huge genealogical diagram reminiscent of the Tree of Jesse. The result was that Magda and her diagram lived with him for half a year, five months longer than he would have liked. She drove away with tears and awareness that her great-great-grandmother, Cecilia, was illegitimate, for in 1813 she was christened by a midwife.

It was then that he decided to take advantage of this genealogical folly and put into practice his ability to extract information from archives. He was pleasantly excited by the thought that he would soon be shut up by a kind of detective, steeped in history. At first, he, as expected in the novels and films “Noir”, whiled away the time in anticipation of phone calls, staring at the ceiling, but over time, clients appeared. From case to case and from order to order, they became more and more, however, they did not at all resemble long-legged brunettes in filperpers stockings. Representatives of two human types mostly visited him. Firstly, the complexed bespectacled men in pullovers, with the expression "Well, what have I done to you?" On the face, who were not unlucky in life, and therefore they hoped to find its meaning in long-decayed ancestors. Submissively and, moreover, with some relief, as if they were initially prepared for such a blow, they accepted the news that they were the descendants of None of Nowhere.

The novel unfolds in the ancient Polish city of Sandomierz, a pearl of architecture not even touched by war, where under the ruins of an old fortress a bloodless corpse was found and near it a knife for kosher cattle slaughter.

How are legends of the past and the difficult history of post-war Polish-Jewish relations related to this murder? Is there any truth to these legends? The hero of the book will have to figure it out to the prosecutor Theodor Shatsky.

For a series of novels with this hero, Zygmunt Milosevsky (b. 1976) was awarded the "Big Caliber" prize, established by the Society of Detective Lovers and the Polish Book Institute.

Best Book Review

. in every tradition there is a grain of truth.

Zygmunt Miloszewski - Polish writer and journalist, author of detective novels. I didn’t read his works, but in this there are references to the novel “Tied”, at that moment I realized that there was a cycle of works about the prosecutor Theodore Shatsky, and I didn’t start reading it from the first book.
Each chapter consists of an introduction, where the news is told, and small subtopics in which the plot and thoughts of the killer develop.
The novel takes place in the city of Sandomierz (Sandomierz), located southeast of Warsaw. Sandomierz is the center of the Roman Catholic Diocese, as well as one of the oldest and most historically significant cities in Poland. A lot is said about the Catholic Church, that people go to services in it, read the Bible and worship God.
The development of the plot is very leisurely. In a small town, a woman is killed and in the best traditions of the genre, the main suspect is her husband. When interviewing witnesses, it turned out that she had a lover, and then all the reasons were obvious: the husband killed his wife without enduring her betrayal. The case is closed, it remains only to find a husband because he disappeared. After a while, they find him, or rather his corpse, and even later - the corpse of a lover, the problem came out. Who is responsible for the triumph and for what purpose were these murders committed? You will find the answer in the novel. In addition to the unusual murders, there are still hints that they are ritual or religiously committed, since mysterious symbols were found at each crime scene.

Thank lyuda_radon for the tip!

Reader Reviews

After reading Marek Krajewski - A Fistful of Scorpions, or Death in Breslau, there was a desire to continue acquaintance with Polish authors of detective stories. It turned out that the names Wojciech Hmelyazh, Marta Guzovskaya, Anna Kantokh, Marcin Vronsky, Mariusz Chubay...I don’t say anything, and it’s not clear whether any of the modern authors translated it.
"The Truth", which turned out to be almost the only one available, is a detective story whose plot is built on the canons traditional for the classics of the genre. The action takes place in the search for answers to questions - who, how and why committed the crime. But for those who read a lot in the framework of the genre - this is not enough and the author copes brilliantly with what could become the backdrop for the killings, but it became equal - the history of the country, the city in which the action takes place and difficult interethnic relations, fueled by religious errors.

Sandomierz is the international capital of ritual murder.

A place where charges of child abduction and related pogroms occurred as regularly as the seasons. The place where the brutal revenge of the Catholics took place under the church banners, where the Church almost legitimized it. A place where until today a canvas hangs in the cathedral, depicting the killing of Catholic children by Jews. As part of the cycle of Christian martyrdom. A place where everything has been done to sweep this gloomy part of history under the carpet.

And if you think that the times of ignorance, frenzy and stupidity have long sunk into oblivion - you are very mistaken. What began many centuries ago had a certain continuation already in the 20th century - war-heated attitude towards Jews, an underlying guilt for participating, not participating, and finally for helping people who had lived side by side for many decades, who were friends, traded, and treated. during the Holocaust. Because the survivors tried to return and saw busy houses, property torn, reluctance to see them with a dumb reproach on the threshold. This is the same story from which you can not erase a word.

But did the Poles get along with the Jews before the war?
- You might think that the Poles got along with the Poles? Are you young people arrived from abroad yesterday? Can the Poles get along with anyone?

The history of the nation, warmed up by what is happening in the country after the end of the war.
How much did I know about the “damned,” about how the new orders were propagated, about the rule “divide and rule” that found yet another confirmation?
A big story is made up of small ones, and each of them is not like any other.
And here is my first thank you to the author - for describing all these distant and not very events, he was extremely correct, did not forget to mention that the same “damned” fought for the country, and many risked their own lives hiding their neighbors.
We know ourselves as much as we have been tested - there is nothing more true than these words. The story in different voices, so controversial, so real. About Poland, which, after 70 years, recalls the war and the Holocaust, which, even after the same number of years, will be divided into those who bawl songs and throw their pig heads and those who are looking for answers to questions about tolerance, unity, and the share of truth.

The time has come and the second thanks - for the main character.

Who is this protagonist? The man is firmly convinced that he stands on the right side of the barricade, that all his activities serve good and justice. Anyone who understands that he suddenly became a hero of provincial Poland - and feels monstrous from this. Dear prosecutor: can you distinguish the face of the killer in this cluster of ghosts and ghouls?
Theodore Shatsky - a prosecutor who looks like a Hollywood sheriff, like Gary Cooper and Clint Eastwood, but he also has something from a primordially Polish officer: an unshakable confidence that he is the right person in the right place. Acquaintance with him took place from scratch, I did not read about family troubles and service in Warsaw, I could only, based on fragmentary thoughts of Shatsky himself, build the image of a professional, practically the genius of an investigation, the legend of the Warsaw prosecutor's office. As for personal qualities. well, who is not without sin, all the more attractive, now lonely, a man on the verge of forty years. A very stellar personality on the horizon of a provincial town.
It was his alienness that became the starting point for the crimes that shook the life of Sandomierz with Sunday crowds of tourists, and the solution to the puzzle lies precisely in the walls of the old city that arose at the dawn of the Polish history of the city.
A woman with a throat cut by a ritual knife for killing livestock, a man with released blood, suspended in a barrel with nails in an abandoned house, the missing leader of the Polish nationalist association. small details that, due to the monstrosity of the installations, did not pay attention. Archival research, which helped to establish finally the cause of the perfect.
And finally, the exposure of all the graciously slipped "tricks"

In Sandomierz, winters are provincial ugly, but spring is coming. you yourself will see what this means, I do not want to explain.
And thanks for the city, too, third.

Reviews:Hidden European War
------
A magnificent film reminiscent of the golden years of Polish cinema of the era of such masterpieces as Ashes and Diamond, First Freedom Day.

To call him a detective too finely is a drama with a filigree-honed plot, a bewitching and gloomy atmosphere, authentic, lively characters. Even the hero’s wife, whom we don’t see, but only hear in the handset, is a lively character!

I must say that the sparks of humor miraculously enliven this detective drama, emphasize, but do not weaken the extremely serious plot vectors.

The cinema masterpiece of Andrzej Wajda with Tsybulsky is not mentioned here accidentally - in the course of the action in the “Grain of Truth” allusions constantly arise with post-war Poland, where the same civil European war, which went on from the 39th, or rather, from 36, continued, of the Spanish year: the war of nationalism with the international.

A war that does not let go until the end today - and not only the Poles.

Separate praise deserves an animated plot on the credits, shot in the best tradition of hardcore videos.

Let's hope that the film of the young Polish director speaks of a real revival of European cinema, which at the end of the 20th century began to lose ground to Hollywood..
