If this is repeated up to 3-4 times a week, a person is worried about this issue, the situation negatively affects his ability to work and health, then the problem exists and requires medical intervention.

Some people do not go to doctors with a problem, but try to solve it on their own with the help of alcohol, daytime sleep, and taking dubious drugs. This leads to the transition of the process to the chronic stage.

What is the ailment

Despite the fact that men are considered to be the stronger sex, they suffer from insomnia no less, and even more than women.

The causes of male insomnia are physiological and psychological.

The latter provoke almost 2/3 cases of the disease.

Physiological factors include factors that lead to changes in the physical condition of men:

    Alcohol. At first glance, alcohol dilates blood vessels, has a relaxing effect on the body. However, after a short period of time, a sharp vascular spasm occurs, which prevents normal sleep.

If in the first half of the night a person falls asleep quickly and deeply, then this effect will be reduced to zero by sleep disturbances in the second half.

In addition, ethanol blocks the production of melatonin - the main hormone of sleep. Small doses of alcohol initially act as sleeping pills, but over time, the body gets used to and requires an increase in quantity.

Also, alcohol exacerbates the course of many diseases, which also does not contribute to a good rest.
Smoking. Nicotine acts on the nervous system, causing irreversible changes. It increases blood pressure, increases heart rate. After quitting smoking, a person notices that he is sleeping poorly.

In fact, insomnia has been accompanying him for a long time. Nicotine prevents the production of adrenaline, serotonin, so the patient feels nervousness, tension.

  • Snoring and intermittent respiratory arrest (apnea) makes a person wake up often.
  • Restless legs syndrome. It is manifested by spasms of the calf muscles, pain at night. The patient is forced to move his legs to alleviate his condition, as a result of his sleep is disturbed.
  • Diseases of the spine: osteochondrosis, hernia, ankylosing spondylitis. Pain syndrome often worsens at night, which interferes with normal rest.
  • Prostatitis. The constant urge to urinate provokes frequent awakenings.

  • Problems with the cardiovascular system: hypertension, myocardial infarction, tachycardia. These conditions do not contribute to good sleep.
  • Mental disorders. These include depression, schizophrenia, phobias, hallucinations. A person is afraid to fall asleep so as not to see nightmares.
  • Infectious diseases (SARS, flu, tonsillitis, etc.). It is difficult for a person to rest due to a stuffy nose, fever, sore throat, cough.
  • Pain of various etiologies. It is impossible to fall asleep if the stomach, head, tooth hurts.
  • Drug use having an exciting effect on the nervous system, for example, nootropics. These funds are recommended to be taken in the morning.
  • Elderly age. With age, the production of sleep hormone - melatonin - decreases. Therefore, many old people suffer from insomnia.
  • The psychological causes of insomnia include:

    1. Stress. A man is worried about some problems, constantly thinking about them. Stress contributes to vasospasm and nervous tension.
    2. Climate and time zone changes. Adaptation requires some time to pass.
    3. Violation of the schedule of work and rest. If a person is used to falling asleep, for example, at 11 o’clock, then it is difficult for him to do this at 9.
    4. Hearty dinner. Many men like to eat fatty meat with beer before going to bed. An abundance of food causes fermentation in the stomach, which leads to insomnia.
    5. Sexual abstinence. Human physiology is such that with sexual abstinence, an excess of energy is obtained, which prevents normal rest. With forced abstinence, the only way out is to increase physical activity.
    6. Sleep Hygiene. This can be an uncomfortable bed, a stuffy room, noise from the street or from the TV on, lamp light.
    7. Hard physical work. Despite fatigue, the patient cannot fall asleep. This is due to increased excitation of the nervous system, muscle pain. It is recommended that you take a warm bath before bedtime to relax.

    Diagnostics

    For diagnosis, the patient should consult a neurologist or somnologist.

    Consultation with a psychiatrist is sometimes required. Diagnosis is based on patient complaints.

    He is asked to keep a sleep diary, where he should note in detail the time of falling asleep and waking up, the duration of rest, etc.

    The collection of anamnesis is important. The doctor needs data on all chronic diseases. Sometimes after treating the underlying disease, sleep problems disappear on their own.

    According to indications, polysomnography is performed. The sleeper is connected to special devices that record all the processes taking place in the brain.
